01No tag family is loaded for the category

Tag All lists only categories that have a tag family in the project. No window tag loaded, no Windows line in the dialog. Load one from Insert → Load Family, Annotations folder, or from your template, and set it as the default under Annotate → Tag → Loaded Tags and Symbols.

02The tags are made, but hidden

Revit says it tagged 24 doors and you see none. Open Visibility/Graphics (VV), Annotation Categories tab, and check that Door Tags, Window Tags or Room Tags are on. A view template can turn them off again every time, so check the template too.

03The elements are not visible in the view

  • Hidden by a filter, by Hide in View, or by a category switched off in Visibility/Graphics.
  • Outside the crop region or outside the view range: a high window above the cut plane is not seen in the plan.
  • In another phase: an element from a later phase, or a demolished one with the phase filter hiding it.
  • In a secondary design option that the view does not show.

Tag All tags only what the view actually draws. Make the element visible, then run it again.

04Some elements were selected

If anything is selected when you open the dialog, Revit offers Only selected objects in current view, and it is ticked. Press Esc to clear the selection first, or untick the option.

05They are already tagged

“Not tagged” means not tagged in this view. A tag hidden behind another, tiny at a big scale, or far away on a leader still counts. Select all tags of the category (right-click a tag → Select All Instances → Visible in View) to find them.

06The elements are in a linked model

Doors and windows in a linked .rvt are skipped unless you tick Include elements from linked files in the dialog. The link must be visible in the view.

07Rooms, areas and spaces need their own objects

A room tag needs a placed room, not just walls around a space. Area tags work only in an area plan. If Room Tags tag nothing, check Architecture → Room & Area → Room first: there may be no rooms in the level at all.

08The view type does not support it

Tag All does not run in schedules, drafting views or sheets, and in a 3D view only when the view is locked (Save Orientation and Lock View).

Quick check: make a new floor plan without a view template and run Tag All there. If it works, the problem is in the old view’s visibility settings, not in the model.

When it works, but not well enough

Even when Tag All does tag everything, three things stay manual:

  • One view at a time. A project with 12 plans, 4 elevations and 10 sections means 26 runs.
  • One position. The tag goes to the middle of the element, so door bubbles land on the wall and window tags inside the room.
  • One tag type. A floor tag for a plan and the one for a section are different types; Tag All uses one.

The usual answers are a Dynamo script for each category, or an add-in. We wrote the DATUM tag tools because we did these three things by hand on every project.

Tag Doors: the left or the right tag from the way each door faces, in the active view or every view at once.
  • Tag Doors and Tag Windows see which way each element faces and use the left or the right tag, so the bubble lands on the right side of the wall.
  • Tag Floors uses the plan tag on a plan and the section tag on a section or an elevation.
  • Tag Stairs, Tag Railing and Tag Curtain Wall Panels for the elements Tag All handles worst.
  • The active view, or every plan, elevation and section at once. Elements already tagged are left alone, and the whole run is one undo.
Tag Windows: the bubble always stands outside the building.

Questions

Why is Tag All Not Tagged greyed out in Revit?

Usually because the active view is a schedule, a sheet, a drafting view or an unlocked 3D view. Switch to a plan, an elevation or a section.

How do I tag all elements in multiple views in Revit?

Revit has no built-in way: Tag All Not Tagged works in the active view only. Use a Dynamo script that loops through the views, or an add-in such as the DATUM tag tools, which tag every plan, elevation and section at once.

Why does Tag All not tag doors in my linked model?

Tick Include elements from linked files in the Tag All Not Tagged dialog, and make sure the link is visible in the view.
